Myers Briggs

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality profiling system that can help individuals and teams to understand the differences in themselves and others. This can help to raise tolerance levels, resolve conflicts, enhance communication and build effective relationships and results. The MBTI test is one of the best known and robust psychometric tests available. It is based on the personality work of Jung as developed by a mother and daughter team Myers and Briggs. The test is based on four dichotomies:

  • Extroversion – Introversion
  • Sensing – Intuition
  • Thinking – Feeling
  • Judging – Perceiving

A total of sixteen personality types are measured by the MBTI providing the participant with an overview of strengths and development areas. This can then by used to develop an action plan for increased effectiveness. The sixteen types come from combining the following continuums:

Favourite World

Do you focus more on the outer world (Extraversion) or the inside world (Introversion)?

Information

Do you like to work with what you know immediately (Sensing) or what you interpret for yourself (Intuition)?

Decisions

 Do you focus first on logic/fact (Thinking) or people/individuals (Feeling)?

Structure

Do you prefer to get things decided (Judging) or stay open to new options (Perceiving)?

 

The test is taken as a paper and pen test followed by a facilitated session where the participant is encouraged to assess their own profile. The Practitioner then reveals the test score. In many cases there is a close match between the participants self perception and the test scores. Where there are discrepancies the Practitioner will help the participant explore what this might mean. The administration and debrief take about one hour and can provide a good base for executive coaching or team development. The MBTI can be administered and debriefed as part of a team development day.
